PROJECT SUNSHINE´S 2009 ANNUAL APPEAL

Countless children facing medical challenges are in a position of uncertainty and discomfort while spending hours, days or even months in the hospital with little respite. Project Sunshine strives to alleviate this kind of suffering by bringing positive energy into young patients´ lives. Because of the commitment, kindness and caring of Project Sunshine volunteers, hospitalized children around the world are able to laugh, be creative and temporarily forget about their worries.

Our educational, recreational and social service programs are needed more than ever in these difficult times as the strain on families and medical facilities grows. We need your support to continue providing these free programs to over 60,000 children and families each year in 100 major cities across the United States, and in five international satellite sites: Canada, China, Israel, Kenya, and Puerto Rico.

Please give as generously as you can to help bring a smile and a glimpse of hope to the children and families facing medical challenges who need our support today and in the coming year.

2009 Accomplishments and Highlights

Project Sunshine - Shine Bracelet "Shine" Bracelet a Hit with NY Yankee
An extraordinary event involving a Project Sunshine volunteer and a special young patient took place on May 15, 2009. The volunteer, Yankee Centerfielder Brett Gardner, met the young patient, Alyssa, who had been waiting months for a heart transplant. During the program, Alyssa gave Brett a Project Sunshine bracelet, promising that if he kept it, he would hit a home run. Hours later Brett hit an historic inside–the–park home run, the first at the new Yankee Stadium. The very next day, Alyssa received her new heart and when she awoke from surgery and watched the recording of Brett rounding the bases she said, "I know heís running for me."

Project Sunshine Kenya Playroom opens and Healthy Living Child Development Program Planning
In August 2009, Project Sunshine Kenya volunteers at Bomu Medical Center participated in a two day intensive training in early childhood development, program planning and basic health promotion, including safe water purification, hand washing, malaria and TB prevention. Already, their efforts have enabled Project Sunshine Kenya to offer clinic-based educational programming three times per week and a treatment buddy outreach program twice weekly, serving over 2,300 HIV affected children. According to on–site coordinator Dennis Ngui, the Kenyan volunteers have an unshakable passion towards serving children and families in Kenya and it is this passion that motivates them to spread sunshine, hope and education throughout the greater Mombasa community.
